The real question is one of scale. For a very small scale operation, the
Mac solution is fine, but it will not scale up to deliver say 100,000
files per day easily. The jury is still out on NT as a very large scale
solution. As you scale up, the administration costs drop since it costs
as much to admin a small host as a heavily used one (at least
marginally). I am admitted UNIX biggot and I have to agree with Rex that
Linux makes UNIX cost competitive at the low end. Additionally UNIX gives
you a much wider selection of hardware vendors, great portability,
greater ability to scale up, greater installed base, longer history of
success in new Internet technologies, further UNIX systems have
successfully morphed through various improvements in their OSs relatively
painlessly (not entirely painlessly though) now including true
multi-threading in many cases.
What about OS/2? The operating system that's half way there ;->
