The San Jose Mercury News, in the heart of Silicon Valley, has two key
reporter openings on its technology team:=01
=01
1) COMMUNICATIONS =85 In effect, this is our information =
superhighway beat. This reporter will explain the trends of how =
communications are changing how we work and live, and will be =
responsible for breaking major developments before any other =
publications. This person must have a full grasp of these =
changes, a vision of converging technologies, and be able to =
write for an audience that ranges from technophiles to =
technophobes. The thrust of this beat is to convey the impact of =
the communications revolution on real people, on industry, and =
to explain how it will happen, who will benefit and who might =
lose. From the Internet and the World Wide Web to telephones to =
satellite and cable-TV links, we need someone who sees the big =
picture and can work in a team setting where getting the best =
story is the priority.
The following experience is required: Demonstrated ability to =
develop sources and break stories in this arena, preferably for =
a daily newspaper, news magazine or news service. If you can't =
show us clips that prove you're plugged in and beat your =
competition, please don't apply. Trade-publication writers will =
be considered if they've also demonstrated an ability to write =
clearly for a broad audience, not just for those in the =
industry. Demonstrated investigative skills will be helpful. =
Candidates also must have the ability/desire to work in a team =
environment.=01

2) GENERAL ASSIGNMENT =85 This reporter must juggle many =
technology assignments with ease. She/he will be asked to cover =
stories involving any of the technology sectors =85 computing, =
telecommunications, software, semiconductor and =
multimedia/entertainment =85 through the lens of consumer and =
business impact on a daily and enterprise basis. It is vital =
that this reporter sees the big picture and can work in a team =
setting where getting the best story is the priority. This =
reporter also will develop how-it-works pieces for our Science =
and Technology section.
The following experience is required: Demonstrated ability to =
handle a variety of stories with authority; strong, clear =
writing skills on varying types of stories, from features to =
dailies to investigative enterprise. A strong streak of =
creativity in spotting and developing unusual tech stories. At =
least three years of daily newspaper experience, at least some =
of which spent covering technology.

We want high-energy, enthusiastic reporters who want to surf =
the digital wave at the Bay Area's best daily newspaper. If you =
meet the qualifications for either job listed above, send e-mail =
to:
Jonathan Krim, assistant managing editor, at JonKrim@aol.com.
Please include a 1-page letter about yourself, and a resume. =
No downloadable files with clips, please. We'll be in touch if =
we want to see more. Thanks.
