We find that most of our graphics can be saved out of Photoshop in 64 or 32
colors (or even fewer colors, for simple icons). There is some loss of image
quality, but the increased page-loading speed more than makes up for it.
John Decker, now with the Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com) taught
me the valuable lesson that combining multiple graphics into a single,
larger image also speeds up page-loading time. For example, six
100x100-pixel icons simply take longer to load than one 600x100 icon.
Using the JPEG format for photographs also cuts down on byte count and
page-loading time. Saving photos using the "medium" JPEG compression option
in Photoshop is usually adequate.
The bottom line, though, is trying to make sure that no single page is
overloaded with graphics. Some people try to put a byte limit on their
pages, often in the 35k to 50k range.
Best of luck with your web site...
