Dear networker,

Your subscription to list NEW-LIST (NEW-LIST - New List Announcements) has
been accepted.

The "NEW-LIST" list has been established as a central address to
post announcements of new public mailing lists. In addition,
"NEW-LIST" may be used as a FINAL verification before establishing a
list (to check for existing lists on the same topic, etc.) or as a
search address of last resort (only after doing your own searches).

The New-List list is Moderated in an attempt to prevent naive or
malicious "noise" from annoying subscribers. Our intent is not to
suppress new list announcements but to ensure high quality information
by answering trivial questions or accidental postings directly.

We will gladly rebroadcast New List announcements, final list
proposals (to avoid conflicts or redundancy), or emegency announcements
about the availability of some list. We do NOT intend to post
discussions of a lists merits, worth, goodness, or other subjective
judgements. Any replies to list searches or responses to a list
announcement should go to the original person doing the search or
making the announcement.

Before posting an announcement or list search to the NEW-LIST list
PLEASE send e-mail to LISTSERV@vm1.nodak.edu (or LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 on
BITNET) with the command(s):

GET NEW-LIST FORMAT
GET LISTSOF LISTS

The first (NEW-LIST FORMAT) describes the format suggested for
list announcements. The second (LISTSOF LISTS) gives some hints and
pointers to more information on doing list searches.

The Subject of items sent to NEW-LIST MUST be in one of the following
formats: (The Subject: field is in the headers, NOT the body!)

1. Subject: NEW: listname - description
To be used to announce a NEW list.

2. Subject: CHANGE: listname - description
To be used to announce a significant list change such as host
location. The body should be in the same format as a NEW
list announcement except that the change should be described
     in the first paragraph.

3. Subject: SEARCH: description
To be used as a "last resort" search ONLY after you have searched
using more than one of the techniques described in LISTSOF LISTS
or the NEW-LIST WOUTERS file. Be sure to indicate in the body
of the mail what searches you have done and why any existing lists
which may appear to match your search are not what you are looking
     for.

You may receive new-list postings as a weekly digest if you prefer.
Announcements are digested and sent out once per week AND when the
digest reaches 1000 lines in size. The weekly digest goes out early
Monday morning (around 0500 or 0600 Monday GMT).

To receive the digest form send listserv@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET
LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 the command:
   set new-list digest
in the body of mail.

You may also control which "topics" you want to receive. To do this
you send one of the commands below to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET
to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 in the BODY of the mail:

   set new-list topics=change,new
to receive only changes and new list announcements
   set new-list topics=search
           to receive only list searches
   set new-list topics=all
to receive all items (this is the default when you subscribe).

If you have comments on the new-list list please let us know!

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF NEW-LIST" command to
LISTSERV@NDSUVM1. Please note that this command must NOT be sent to the list
address (NEW-LIST@NDSUVM1) but to the LISTSERV address (LISTSERV@NDSUVM1).

NOTE WELL:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that all COMMANDS MUST be sent
to LISTSERV and NOT to the LIST!!! Send ONLY mail contributions
to NEW-LIST. Send ALL commands such as INDEX, GET, SIGNOFF, etc.
to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 (BITNET) or LISTSERV@VM1.NoDak.EDU (Internet).
The command(s) go in the Text/Body of the mail and NOT subject.
Thank you! The embarassment you save may be your own... ;-)
  +-------------------------------------------------------------------+

Note: your distribution options have been defaulted as per the "SET NEW-LIST
REPRO" command.

The amount of acknowledgement you wish to receive from this list upon
completion of a mailing operation can be changed by means of a "SET NEW-LIST
option" command, where "option" may be either "ACK" (mail acknowledgement),
"MSGACK" (interactive messages only) or "NOACK" as well as "NOREPRO", "REPRO",
"FULLHDR", or "SHORTHDR".

Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can obtain a
list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX NEW-LIST" command to
LISTSERV@NDSUVM1. These files can then be retrieved by means of a "GET NEW-LIST
filetype" command, or using the database search facilities of LISTSERV. Send an
"INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.

You may also obtain copies of the list notebooks via anonymous FTP to
VM1.NoDak.EDU (134.129.111.1, userid Anonymous, any password). Once validated
do a CD LISTARCH and DIR NEW-LIST.* to see the notebooks available. Our file
system is NOT hierarchical so you must do a CD ANONYMOUS if you want to return
to the "root".

Other files of interest are kept in the NEW-LIST "filelist". The INDEX
command described above will list them. Of special interest are the "NEW-LIST
FORMAT" file and "LISTSOF LISTS" files. To receive these send the following
commands to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1.

GET NEW-LIST FORMAT (Recommended Format of Announcements)
GET LISTSOF LISTS (Hints and Tools for List Searching)

Please note that it is presently possible for other people to determine that
you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which
returns the network address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not wish
your name to be available to others in this fashion, just issue a "SET NEW-LIST
CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the "General
Introduction guide", which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO GENINTRO"
command to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1.

Virtually,

   The LISTSERV management
